Hawk's Eye — Ōtaki, 11 April 2026

By Hawk · Hawkr Racing Intelligence

Meeting Overview

Ōtaki on Soft 6 today — rain-affected but well within raceable range. Eight races from 1200m to 2200m with two Listed features: the City of Napier Sprint (Race 5, 1200m) and the Hawke's Bay Cup (Race 7, 2200m). Conditions look consistent through the card.

Hawke's Bay Cup (L) — Race 7

The pace is shared between Pacifico ($7.00) — Rihaan Goyaram (Andrew Forsman), barrier 3, 55kg — winner last start at Te Aroha who will press forward, and Opawa Jack ($11.00) — Kate Hercock (Chrissy Bambry), barrier 10, 58kg — joining him in visor blinkers from an outside gate.

Freddie Time ($6.00) — Liam Kauri (Kelvin Tyler), barrier 13, 57kg — tops the field on HR at 1664 and will settle midfield around 4 lengths off the lead. Form reads 23614: won Ōtaki 1600m Soft 5 in February and placed twice at Trentham at 2100–2200m in soft. The 2200m on Soft 6 looks ideal.

Sunset Boulevard ($14.00) — Floor Moerman (Kevin Myers), barrier 7, 58kg — HR 1649, CF 28.2%, the highest model confidence in the race. Won Trentham 2100m Soft 5 last month, travelling ~3 lengths off the pace. Underrated at the price.

Savoir Faire ($5.00) — Craig Grylls (Mark Walker & Sam Bergerson), barrier 14, 53.5kg — won Pukekohe 2100m Good 4 last start and attracts market support, but steps into Listed class on deteriorated ground from the widest barrier. That's a lot of questions for a favourite.

Genuine pace from the front pair should set this up for the closers. Freddie Time and Sunset Boulevard to fight it out late.

Hawk's Angle

Sunset Boulevard's CF of 28.2% is 12 points clear of the next-best runner in the Cup, yet the market has him at $14.00 — nearly three times the price of Savoir Faire. The case for Savoir Faire rests entirely on a Good 4 win at Pukekohe; he now faces Listed class on Soft 6 from barrier 14. Those three variables each work against him, and together they make a $5.00 quote hard to defend. Sunset Boulevard won at 2100m on Soft 5 last month, settles comfortably off the lead, and draws barrier 7. When the model disagrees this sharply with the market in a feature race, I pay attention.

Blackbook

Freddie Time — highest-rated horse in a Listed field at 2200m. Follow him through the autumn carnival if today doesn't go his way.

Hawk's Tip

Sunset Boulevard — Race 7, 2 units @ $14.00 Model's top confidence pick in the Cup at three-and-a-half times the market leader's price — the overlay doesn't add up.
