Riverton, Soft6 measured at 6:32am. Fine overhead, rail True with no variation. Left-hand 1650m circuit, 400m straight. Thirty-five millimetres of rain in the last seven days — the ground is holding but it won't be quick.
R7 — Gore Guineas (L) 1200m, $80,000
Fourteen 3YO runners go around in the Gore Guineas and the barrier draw still creates a genuine pace problem — but not the kind that punishes wide draws as much as you'd think. The Riverton 1200m starts in a chute off the back straight, giving horses roughly 300-350m of straight running before they hit the first turn. There's time and space to settle before it matters.
Three horses map as early leaders: Better Shared ($7.50, B1, Amber Riddell, Kelvin Tyler, HR 1494), Queen Of Sheba ($5.00, B2, Corey Campbell, Anna Furlong, HR 1536), and Miss Starlight ($6.00, B7, Tina Comignaghi, John & Karen Parsons, HR 1565) all look to press hard. But that straight chute section means they'll be establishing tempo in a line rather than scrimmaging into an immediate turn — the early pace is still hot, it just won't be chaotic.
Hello Hayley ($7.00, B14, Donovan Cooper, Sophie Price, HR 1591) holds the top rating in the field and has won three of her last four, including back-to-back wins at Wingatui Soft6 and Ascot Park Soft7. From B14 she'd ordinarily be a concern in a short-course sprint, but the chute means Donovan Cooper gets a chance to cross and settle midfield — 4-5 lengths off the lead — before the track bends away. Top HR, proven wet ground, and the layout is kinder to her than the barrier number suggests.
Arctic Jewel ($8.00, B17, Hayley Hassman, Walker/Bergerson, HR 1561) won two starts back and ran second last start — similar positioning, worth including in multis.
Cool Aza Rene ($8.00, B16, Triston Moodley, Walker/Bergerson) is the same price but data is thin. Handle with care.
Hawk's Angle — R8 Francolin Stakes, 1400m
Connello ($3.90, B9, Tina Comignaghi, Lisa Latta, HR 1629) carries the highest Hawk's Rating of any runner at this meeting. She's 61 points clear of the field average in R8 — that's not a marginal advantage, it's a genuine class gap.
She should settle about 3-4 lengths off the lead from barrier 9, and Comignaghi knows the rhythm. Her two most recent runs at 1600m haven't produced wins but this is 1400m on Soft6 at Riverton — tighter trip, ground she handles.
The danger is Third Decree ($3.90, B6, Kavish Chowdhoory, M&M Pitman, HR 1614) — second-highest rating in the field, recent 3rd at Riccarton Park. Maps as a deep backmarker and needs the race to fall apart. Canasta ($3.80, B3, Billy Jacobson, Anna Furlong, HR 1568) won R65 last start but sits 61 HR points below Connello at virtually the same price. The market hasn't separated them — I have.

Hawk's Tip
Connello — R8, Francolin Stakes, $3.90, 1 unit. Class edge is real. She's on equal odds to Third Decree who maps as a deep backmarker — Connello gets a cleaner run, holds a 15-point HR advantage over her, and goes at a fair price. The market is mispriced on that spread.
