Eight races at Whanganui on Sunday. The track should be in the Good range — zero rain forecast, sunny with a high of 22°C and a light easterly. Perfect conditions for an honest surface.
The card is headlined by the G3 Windsor Park Stud Manawatu Breeders' Stakes over 2040m (R7), the only black-type event. Three maidens open proceedings, with four staying races (2040m) spread across the afternoon.
R7 — Windsor Park Stud Manawatu Breeders' Stakes (G3) 2040m
Ten runners and Who Knows ($2.80) (Niall Quinn) is the deserved favourite. Jonathan Riddell rides from barrier 6 with 57kg, and she should track the leaders, sitting about 2–3 lengths off the front pair. Her HR of 1672 is the best in the field by 57 points — a significant gap at this level. She won at Trentham on 21 March carrying 58.5kg in a handicap, and the form prior reads 1-4-9-X-1. The 9th is the blemish but the two wins either side of it say more. She has won at Wanganui before (June last year) and has handled a range of tracks.
The main threat is Girl Talk ($5.00) (Stephen Nickalls). Samantha Collett rides from barrier 1 with 56.5kg. She won at Wanganui on 14 March in R75 company, so she has fresh track form. Her HR of 1613 is the second-best in the race, and she is above her career peak — a mare in form. She maps to sit back, roughly 4–5 lengths off the lead, which means she needs the tempo to be genuine.
Monologue ($4.00) (Alexander Fieldes) gets Joe Doyle from barrier 3 with 56.5kg. She also raced at Wanganui on 14 March, finishing 3rd. Her form reads 3-1-X-2-3 — honest, competitive, but she has not been beating these. HR of 1563 has her well below the top two. The inside draw and Doyle are her best assets.
Sol De Otono ($18) (Guy Lowry & Leah Zydenbos) is the model's top pick at a big price. Craig Grylls from barrier 8 with 57kg. She has won her last start in R65 at New Plymouth and her HR of 1596 is above her career peak, with the highest momentum in the field (+23.1). The catch: she has come through maiden and R65 racing only. This is a genuine G3 step up and the form has not been tested at this level.
Bozo ($7.00) (Kevin Myers) had three straight wins before a 7th at New Plymouth last start. Lily Sutherland rides from barrier 2 with 57kg. HR of 1615 puts her 3rd on ratings. She maps to settle back, which is a concern at a small track — she needs a genuine tempo to produce her finish.
The pace should come from Electron (Sam Mynott, Mereana Hudson, barrier 4) and Platinum Goddess (Lisa Latta, Bruno Queiroz, barrier 10), both mapping to lead or sit right on the speed. Who Knows and Sol De Otono track just behind them. The back half — Girl Talk, Monologue, Bozo — all need genuine tempo to produce their finishes, and a small track like Whanganui makes it harder to find clear air from behind.
Hawk's Angle
My model flagged one bet for the day: Bamboozle in R6 at $11, with an edge of 0.187. She is scratched. That voids the only model-backed play on the card.
Without that bet, the G3 becomes the only race worth a unit. Who Knows at $2.80 is short, but the HR gap is not a coin-toss — 57 points is the kind of separation that rarely loses to a maiden graduate. Three mares in this field are racing above their career peaks (Girl Talk, Sol De Otono, Monologue), which usually means they are peaking or about to flatten. Who Knows is still climbing toward hers.
The pace map helps her. She sits in the pocket behind two genuine speed horses, and Riddell has ridden her to win at Trentham in a bigger field. This is a smaller track, a smaller field, and she maps to do no work. The price is not exciting, but I am not in the business of finding value where there is none.
Blackbook
No runners — Shining Pearl, Omega Boy and Cheerio all absent.

Best HR in the field by a wide margin, last-start winner, maps to sit in the perfect spot. The price asks you to trust the rating, and I do.
