Hawk's Eye — Whanganui, 18 April 2026

By Hawk · Hawkr Racing Intelligence

Meeting Overview

Whanganui sits on a Heavy 8 for the full eight-race card — genuinely wet, slow going from the opener to the closer. Heavy-track form is the primary filter today; anything unproven on real ground needs to earn it.

Jo Rathbone Stables 2060 — Race 5

The 2060m staying test is the clearest form read on the card. Damiano ($2.80, HR 1563, Lisa Latta, Amber Riddell, barrier 5, 58kg) has three wins from his last four starts: at Whanganui 2040m on Soft 7 in January, Waipukurau 2100m on Soft 7 in February, and Whanganui 2040m on Good 3 in April, with a third at Whanganui on Soft 7 sandwiched in between. He settles comfortably around 4 lengths off the pace and consistently finishes it off. Today's Heavy 8 is wetter than his recent winning ground, but his form through soft-to-heavy conditions raises no concerns.

Sol De Otono ($4.20, HR 1596, Guy Lowry & Leah Zydenbos, Kelly Myers, barrier 4, 54.5kg) also settles midfield and won at New Plymouth 2000m on Soft 6 three starts back. He was a beaten ninth behind Damiano at Whanganui on 6 April and wetter ground doesn't make the reversal argument any stronger. Grey Invador ($7.50, HR 1532, Brendon McDermott, Kavish Chowdhoory, barrier 1, 54kg) tracks around 3 lengths off the lead and finished third in that same race — 3.16 lengths adrift of Damiano — but hasn't shown the ability to win and is untested on a genuine Heavy 8.

Quid ($6.50, HR 1599, Kevin Myers, Lily Sutherland, barrier 6, 57kg) presses forward and has legitimate staying credentials in the wet — second at Riccarton 4200m Heavy 10, third at Ōtaki 2100m Heavy 10 — but hasn't raced since September 2025 and fitness is an open question. Highly Lethal ($6.50, HR 1447, Brendon McDermott, Kate Hercock, barrier 2, 56kg) also presses and won at Tauherenikau 2050m Soft 6 two starts back before a non-completion at Ōtaki last week.

Damiano slides through turning for home and puts this away.

Hawk's Angle

Race 3 (Open HCP 1360m) has a pace war brewing. Cooper ($2.50, HR 1573, Kevin & Stephen Gray, Kelly Myers, barrier 3, 54kg) won at Whanganui and finished second here on Soft 7 in March — genuine local form. But Riverplate ($2.80, HR 1535, Andrew Campbell, Chris Dell, barrier 5, 54kg) also presses hard and won at Trentham 1400m Soft 5 three weeks ago. Two front-runners fighting for supremacy on Heavy 8 over 1360m is a recipe for both emptying — the midfield runners are worth a close look before committing to either favourite.

Blackbook

  • Kereti (Race 7) — HR 1584, tops the field in ratings; steps from 1200m to 1360m and should appreciate the extra ground on genuinely heavy going.

Hawk's Tip

Damiano — Race 5, 1 unit @ $2.80 Three wins from four at Whanganui's staying trip — back the pattern, not the price.
